What is a Dietitian?

Registered Dietitians are the food and nutrition experts, translating the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. When you need food and nutrition information based on facts or need to know how a healthy diet improves health and fights disease a Registered Dietitian can provide you with sound, easy-to-follow nutrition advice. The expertise, training and credentials that back a Registered Dietitian are vital in promoting positive lifestyle changes. Registered Dietitians are the only health care professionals specifically trained in providing Medical Nutrition Therapy. As nutrition experts, dietitians must remain abreast of the current literature to provide accurate and medically appropriate information.

What is Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)?

Individuals with a variety of conditions and illnesses can improve their quality of life by receiving medical nutrition therapy. MNT is the application of the science of food and nutrition to the prevention and treatment of acute or chronic disease.

The Academy of  Nutrition and Dietetics defines MNT as “nutritional diagnostics, therapy and counseling services for the purpose of disease management.”

We want you to be happy and healthy, that’s why we’re here.

Here are seven reasons you should consider scheduling an appointment with a Dietitian:

u

1. You want to lose weight:

Being overweight can put you at risk for acquiring a number of chronic illnesses, like heart disease and diabetes. An RDN can help you develop a meal plan and take into consideration your lifestyle so you can be successful in your weight loss journey, while getting all of your essential nutrients, and ultimately prevent or reverse chronic disease.
u

2. Allergies and food sensitivities:

Managing conditions like celiac disease or food allergies means there are some foods you just can’t eat which can be overwhelming. We can help you figure out how to eliminate those foods and create a balanced diet you’ll enjoy.
u

3. You are pregnant or want to become pregnant:

A healthy pregnancy is about much more than just taking prenatal vitamins. An RDN can work with you to develop a meal plan that ensures you’re getting all the right nutrients and prevents conditions that can harm your baby, like gestational diabetes.
u

4. You have digestive problems:

Treating digestive problems requires quite a bit of tweaking in terms of your diet. There may be foods that you need to eliminate and others that you need to add. A registered dietitian nutritionist will work with you to help fine-tune your diet so you are not aggravating your condition.
u

5. You have diabetes, cardiovascular problems or high blood pressure:

An RDN serves as an integral part of your health-care team by helping you safely change your eating plan without compromising taste or nutrition.
u

6. Issues with food and eating healthfully:

A registered dietitian nutritionist can assist with eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia and weight issues.
u

7. You want to eat smarter:

A registered dietitian can help you sort through misinformation; learn how to read labels at the supermarket; discover that healthy cooking is inexpensive, learn how to eat out without ruining your eating plan and how to resist workplace temptations.
